HISTORY AND SCIENCE

The Thermo-mechanical treatment of metals and alloys Laboratory was founded in 1974 as an unstructured division, and in 1982 it was reorganized into a structural unit for scientific- and- research activity to obtain the heat treated and pressure treated samples of metals and alloys developed at the Institute and at the Experimental Engineering-and-Technical Bureau (EETB). The PhD Rafalovskyi V.A. had been the Head of the Laboratory until 1998, from 1998 to 2008 – PhD P.G. Yakovenko. Prof., chief researcher Valentin Ye. Panarin has been heading the Laboratory since 2008.

In cooperation with other subdivisions of the Institute the Laboratory participated in:

  • Creation of non-magnetic corrosion resistant invar alloys on chromium basis;
  • Creation of a superconductive cable of the electric power transmission lines;
  • Application of the alloys with the shape memory effect;
  • Development of steels with nonequilibrium nitrogen composition by methods of high temperature isostatic pressing and die casting in nitrogen atmosphere;
  • Application into production of a technology, having no analogues in the world practice, for obtaining of semi-finished wires for creation of elastic elements operating at temperatures to 850°Ñ (nickel based alloys) and to 1200 °C (niobium based alloys).

The following scientific-and-technical developments were worked out at the Laboratory:

  • The unique technologies of carbon nanotubes growing on ion-plasma sputtering plants and obtaining of metal composite coatings strengthened by them, were created;
  • The series of coatings on iron-base with interstitial phases for the industrial needs with high tribotechnical, corrosion and other functional properties was developed;
  • biocompatible composite coatings of hydroxyapatite strengthened by carbon nanotubes were created.

The pilot equipment for carrying out of the above mentioned developments (defended by author`s certificates) was developed and produced at the Laboratory.
