The theory of exciton states in a semiconductor quantum dot (QD) under conditions of dominating polarization interaction of an electron and a hole with a spherical (quantum dot–dielectric matrix) interface is developed. The substantial increase of binding energy of the exciton, Eex(a), within the QD of CdSe and CdS with radii a???aex is observed. Binding energies of the excitons in QDs exceeded those in CdSe and CdS single crystals by factors of 7.4 and 4.5, respectively.
