Processes and mechanisms of oxidation in the air (300–1300 K) of nanocrystalline and micron 2H-WS2, 2H-MoS2 powders are investigated. According to complex thermal DTA–ТG–DТG analysis, thermogravimetry and X-ray studies of oxidation products, it is revealed that thermal stability in the air of nanocrystalline 2H-WS2 and 2H-MoS2 powders insignificantly decreases in comparison with the similar data for micron powders (for nanocrystalline 2H-WS2 powders, 570–1000 K, and for micron powders, 600–1000 K). Mechanisms of oxidation of layered nanocrystalline 2H-WS2, 2H-MoS2 powders are caused by nanocrystalline state, the sizes of their anisotropic nanoparticles, and possible adsorption of oxygen and water.
