The instability of isolated nanowires during annealing and the instability within the region of their contact during sintering are investigated. Spontaneous fragmentation of isolated nanowires caused by the Plateau–Rayleigh instability is ascertained. As shown, the contact of wires intensifies instability and can be a probable place of wire breakages.
