The spherical silica particles are synthesized with thiourea сomplexing groups using the Stober method in ethanol–ammonia solutions. The presence of functional groups is consistent with the data of IR and NMR spectroscopies, and elemental analysis. However, under such conditions of synthesis, the content of functional groups (0.2–0.7 mmol/g) is lower than expected, based on the ratio of the reacting alkoxysilanes. As determined, increasing mixing time of reaction solution (from 2 to 12 hours) has virtually no effect on the average size of particles formed during the synthesis (270 nm). However, the size of submicron particles can be influenced by varying the ratio of the reacting components, the order of their introduction, and the temperature of the solution.
