Ethylene is successfully used as a carbon source for synthesis of multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) by chemical catalytic vapour deposition (CCVD) over Ni, Co, or Fe nanoparticles. The yield of purified carbon nanotubes reaches 1.8 g per gram of catalyst per hour. The active phase for MWCNTs growing is formed by the soft reduction of corresponding nitrate by diluted hydrogen at 450–500?C followed by further decomposition of ethylene-containing gaseous mixture at temperature of 750?C.
