Tunnelling and jumping current behaviour at fast on/off voltage switching for both off-resonant and resonant electron transmission is studied in the system ‘electrode–molecule–electrode’. As shown for the molecule having a single active molecular orbital, taken as an example, in the case when links of this molecule with the electrodes are not identical, on/off currents can be higher by several orders of magnitude than stationary currents through the molecule. Switching-on/off currents are especially large at resonant transmission. This effect is caused by kinetic recharge of molecule that is associated with inelastic jumping processes among the molecule and the electrodes.
