Annealing influence on the lattice structure of nanoscale zirconia particles in different atmospheres is investigated using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) method. Composition of the samples under investigation is ZrO2???3% Y2O3???0.5% Cr2O3. Experiments are carried out in two variants. In the first variant, previously annealed samples are annealed in air and than in hydrogen. In the second variant, initial, non-annealed samples are annealed in hydrogen. In experiments of the first variant, EPR signals decreasing is observed. It is caused by the fact that hydrogen changes local surrounding of chromium ions, with a consequent recharging these ions from Cr5? to Cr3? state. For temperatures Т ? 150?С, these changes are not observed. For the second-variant experiments, EPR signals from chromium ions appear only at Т???350?С. The cause is that the presence of hydrogen during the samples’ annealing inhibits effective removal of hydroxyl groups from samples’ structure.
