The influence of nanocrystalline fibrous alumina additives on the structure and
properties of ceramic material based on cordierite matrix is investigated. The
material is synthesized from highly-dispersed natural mineral powders, i.e.,
clay, talc and industrial alumina, which form cordierite matrix during an annealing
at temperatures higher than 1200?Ñ. Investigation of phase composition
shows that, in process of composite heat treatment, the solid-phase reactions
took place, and mullite and alumina–magnesia spinel are formed between
oxide fibres and matrix that results in composite-strength increase. As established,
the introduction of additives of Al2O3 nanocrystalline fibres into composition
mixture of powders of natural materials and alumina raises porosity and
heat resistance of composite and lowers its heat conductivity. These properties
permit the use of this ceramic composite for induction-furnace isolation.
