The physical and chemical properties of highly refined amorphous silica surface
are unique, providing its numerous biological effects: high hydrophilicity,
affinity to proteins, adsorption of microorganisms and a number of lowmolecular
substances, mainly nitrogen-containing ones. The specified properties
of amorphous silica and its ability to modulate pharmacokinetics and biotransformation
of other medications under joint administration allow the use
of this material not only as the medication for application and enteral therapy,
but also as the matrix-carrier for the fabrication of the combined drugs. The
fabrication of the combined drugs based on amorphous silica holds considerable
promise for pharmacy. A number of medications (Aquasil, Siliglucan, Fitosilard,
Lysosil, Lysetox, Flotoxan etc.) are now at different stages of development,
preclinical and clinical trials.
